Sinharaja Rain Forest is home to numerous indigenous birds such as the Ceylon Hanging Parrot (Loriculusberyllinus), the Ceylon Grey Hornbill (Ocycerosgingalensis), the Ashy-headed Laughing Thrush (Garrulaxcinereifrons), Layardβs parakeet (Psittaculacalthripae), the Jungle fowl (Gallus lafayetii ), the Spur fowl (Galloperdixbicalcarata), the Ceylon Wood Pigeon (Columba torringtonii), the Brown- capped Babbler (Pellorneumfuscocapillum), the Red-faced Malkoha (Phaenicophaeuspyrrhocephalus) and the Ceylon Blue Magpie (Urocissa ornate) among others, are prominent in this area. 19 of Sri Lankaβs 20 species of endemic bird species in Sri Lanka are found in the Sinharaja Reserve Among the endangered birds are Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon, Green-Billed Caucal, Sri Lankan white-headed starling, Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Caucal, Sri Lanka Spur fowl Sri Lankan Blue Magpie, and Ashy-headed Babbler, all of which are endemic.
Loris watching at Sinharaja
Lorises are nocturnal and arboreal. They are found in tropical and woodland forests of India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia. Loris locomotion is a slow and cautious climbing form of quadrupedal-ism. Some lorises are almost entirely insectivorous, while others also include fruits, gums, leaves, and slugs in their diet.Five decades ago, the passion of a British naval officer for trees culminated in an arboretum in our island country. Established over seven acres at the time, it expanded to more than 34 acres after it was donated to the IFS (Institute of Fundamental Studies). Today, Sam Popham's Arboretum is home to many species of birds, butterflies, dragonflies and mammals, including the uncommon, nocturnal slender loris native to Sri Lanka and India. Since our naturalists are used to this special sanctuary of flora and fauna, you can trust them to lead you along the night walk effortlessly. They will use torches with comparatively less obtrusive red lights to scan for loris and turn on white lights only when they see one. These arboreal species have long slender bodies and wide, rounded eyes that shine in the dark. Besides the loris, you might also spot mouse deer, civet cats and rabbits. A stroll around this natural haven could give guests a lifetime of experience.
